SERVICES

The following populations are served and therapeutic approaches are utilized by our Therapists who have received extensive training in these areas:

The following modalities are utilized as a way to assist with problem-solving and treatment:

Individual Therapy is provided to adults, adolescents and children and is offered office based, home based, and school based. This is face-to-face therapy that assists the client with working through identified issues.

Art Therapy

Interactive Therapies (including Play and Art) are utilized with children from 4 years old up to 10 years of age. Therapists have received training in several types of play therapy including sand tray therapy. These experiential services assist children to work through emotional material using play and art.

Art Therapy

Services for children in each of the three offices include the utilization of therapeutically designed offices (Play Therapy and Art Therapy). These offices are used to facilitate therapeutic play with numerous kinds of play therapy equipment (including sand tray, puppets, doll house and figures to name only a few available items), an assortment of types of art media and games. Therapists who utilize these modalities of treatment receive training annually to assist them with keeping up to date with latest trends.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is required of all therapists who work in our Sexual Abuse Program. This type of therapy has been shown to be effective with children ages 6-18 who are experiencing behavioral problems related to sexual abuse, anxiety, death of a loved one or any other event experienced as trauma.

Family Therapy - is utilized with all children under 18 and where it would be beneficial. With children, the parent can work on issues identified to assist them in helping their child. Sessions are also held with the parent and child together to work through sensitive material.

Parent Child Observation - work with families toward reunification and assist parents with appropriate parenting skills.

Child Parent Relationship Therapy (Filial Therapy) - a curriculum to help build and improve the parent-child relationship.

Family Therapy is also utilized with couples, with siblings, with grandparents and their grandkids, between foster parents and foster children, with any combination of family members who could benefit from services. There can be many barriers to families getting along which can impact each member's ability or lack of ability to improve. Family Therapy is often a key component to services.

Group Therapy - is utilized for those who benefit from knowing there are others who are going through the same experience that they are going through. We have ongoing groups under the Sexual Abuse Contract that include:

The Sexual Abuse Non Offender Group - is a 12 week Psycho-educational Group for those who were involved with a child who was sexually abused. Many failed to protect the child from sexual abuse; some group members will gain custody of a child that was abused in another household. A component of the group is to learn to recognize signs and symptoms of sexual abuse.

The Sexual Awareness Group - is a 24-week Psycho-educational Group for those who have had the Department of Human Services confirm that (s) he was sexually inappropriate with a child. This person, however, does not have charges filed by the police. The curriculum is focused upon boundaries and appropriate behavior among many other important issues to address.

Victim Group Therapy - address victim issues in order to within a group setting so that the victim does not feel so alone.

Sex Offender Group - this group is for those categorized as a "Sex Offender" because charges have been filed or because an assessment has been done that indicates the person is a Sex Offender. The length of group depends upon the progress of the person; however, it is usually at least one year. This group can be paid for by the SA Contract; however, most of the time, it is recommended that the Offender be responsible for his/her own fee.

The following are sometimes recommended but not paid for by the Sexual Abuse Contract:

Psychosexual Assessment - this is recommended if a person has been referred by D.H.S. or another source and has had charges and/or indicators that (s) he was violent or has a past criminal record.

Polygraph - the Polygraph is a part of the Sex Offender Program and is recommended for those who deny their offense.

Services for sexually focused services are designed primarily for the Department of Human Services. Transitions, Inc. was the first agency in the Oklahoma County/Canadian County area to specialize in sexual abuse starting in 1997. The Department of Human Services awarded this agency a contract to work with sexual abuse victims and families in 2003. These services are paid for when referred by D.H.S.; this includes Child Protective Services, Prevention and Permanency Planning. (Indian Child Welfare and Judges can also refer.) The following services are also paid for through the sexual abuse contract:

Family

Individual Therapy - to address sexual abuse issues of a child, their sibling, or parent.

Family Therapy - work on reunification or on living together safely following sexual abuse. Issues are resolved and a Safety Plan is developed to protect the victim and any potential victim in the future.

A benefit of referring under this contract is that the child's Medicaid does not have to be utilized to pay for their parent's services. It is ideal to work with the children on their issues, the parents on their issues, family therapy together, and then work on reunification or on building relationships.

Payment sources are available such as Medicaid primarily.

Therapists utilize a wide range of approaches when dealing with children, adolescents, adults and families. In addition to TF-CBT, each has been trained to utilize many therapeutic approaches. The following is a list of only a few: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Psychodynamic; Reality Therapy; Structural Strategic Therapy; Rational Emotive Therapy; Biofeedback; Relaxation Techniques such as Systematic Relaxation.

Transitions, Inc. takes many types of referrals - private, D.H.S., referrals from Psychiatric Hospitals, from Physicians and Psychiatrists, from other Mental Health Providers, from anyone. Although we have a Sexual Abuse Contract from the Department of Human Services, this doesn't mean that we work for D.H.S. This agency is independent from any entity. We do believe in utilizing a "Multi-disciplinary Team" when needed for cases that are complex (court-involved, where there are several providers, and in other cases); however, the consumer would always be aware and will sign a "consent to release information".
